As a freelancer or job seeker, it is important to have a resume that stands out among the rest—one of the more visually pleasing options on the market today is the infographic resume.
An infographic resume enables a job seeker to better visualize his or her career history, education and skills.
Unfortunately, not everyone is a graphic designer, and whipping up a professional-looking infographic resume can be a difficult task for the technically unskilled job seeker. For those of us not talented in design, it can also be costly to hire an experienced designer to toil over a career-centric infographic.
Luckily, a number of companies are picking up on this growing trend and building apps to enable the average job seeker to create a beautiful resume.
To spruce up your resume, check out these four tools for creating an infographic CV. If you’ve seen other tools on the market, let us know about them in the comments below.
After creating an account and connecting via LinkedIn, a user can edit his or her profile summary, work experience, education, links, skills, interests, languages, stats, recommendations and awards. And voila, a stunning infographic is created.
The company’s vision is to “be the future of resumes.” Lofty goal, but completely viable, given that its iteration of the resume is much more compelling than the simple, black-and-white paper version that currently rules the world.
Re.vu, a newer name on the market, is another app that enables a user to pull in and edit his or her LinkedIn data to produce a stylish Web-based infographic.
The infographic layout focuses on the user’s name, title, biography, social links and career timeline—it also enables a user to add more graphics, including stats, skill evolution, proficiencies, quotes and interests over time.
Besides the career timeline that is fully generated via the LinkedIn connection, the other graphics can be a bit tedious to create, as all of the details must be entered manually.
In the end, though, an attractive infographic resume emerges. This is, by far, the most visually pleasing option of all of the apps we reviewed.
Based on a user’s imported LinkedIn data, Kinzaa creates a data-driven infographic resume that focuses on a user’s skills and job responsibilities throughout his or her work history.
The tool is still in beta, so it can be a bit wonky at times—but if you’re looking for a tool that helps outline exactly how you’ve divided your time in previous positions, this may be your tool of choice.
Unlike other tools, it also features a section outlining the user’s personality and work environment preferences. Details such as preferences on company size, job security, challenge level, culture, decision-making speed and more are outlined in the personality section, while the work environment section focuses on the user’s work-day length, team size, noise level, dress code and travel preferences.
Brazen Careerist, the career management resource for young professionals, launched a new Facebook application in September that generates an infographic resume from a user’s Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn information.
After a user authorizes the app to access his or her Facebook and LinkedIn data, the app creates an infographic resume with a unique URL—my infographic resume is located at brazen.me/u/ericaswallow.
The infographic features a user’s honors, years of experience, recommendations, network reach, degree information, specialty keywords, career timeline, social links and LinkedIn profile image.
The app also creates a “Career Portfolio” section which features badges awarded based on a user’s Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn achievements. Upon signing up for the app, I earned eight badges, including “social media ninja,” “team player” and “CEO in training.” While badges are a nice addition, they aren’t compelling enough to keep me coming back to the app.
Have you used a Web app to create an infographic resume? If so, which tool did you use and how was your experience? Let us know in the comments below.
Weddings can be complicated and stressful affairs so would you be loving it if someone was able to serve up the whole meal deal for you?
Imagine having your ceremony, reception, wedding cake and catering for up to 100 people provided for just £250.
There’s just one drawback – it’s at McDonald’s.
Couples can tie the knot at the fast food chain in Hong Kong from January 2011.
But while you may think any self-respecting bride would blush if she were to get married there, McDonald’s claims it has decided to offer the service only after acquiescing to public demand for it.
The danger of barbecue sauce squirting down the bride’s dress is seemingly inconsequential when compared to some people’s attachment to their local branch and the desire for a Big Mac and fries.
The idea first came about after one couple, who met at a McDonald’s, held their wedding reception at a branch in Hong Kong earlier this year.
Helen Cheung, Hong Kong McDonald’s director of corporate communications, said: ‘Over the past two years, we’ve started receiving calls from people who want to have a wedding party in our restaurants. There are about 10 calls a month.
‘People said they’d dated here, or met here, and wanted to get married here.
‘We see this as a business opportunity.’
As if a McWedding wouldn’t be different enough already, it would have to be a champagne-free ceremony because alcohol is banned from the family-friendly restaurants.
And the bride shouldn’t expect any special treatment, such as walking to the front of the queue to collect her Chicken McNuggets, because she will have to vye for space with normal customers as McDonald’s plans to keep the branch open as usual.
But if, given the auspicious beginnings, the marriage lasts at least a year, the happy couple can return to celebrate their union again because the chain also plans to host anniversary parties.

Generosity is one of the basic elements in human happiness. However, research shows that just 1 in 10 people experience generosity from others. We would like to help change that trend, by doing something more than just giving chocolate.

It was the world’s first chocolate shop where you couldn’t pay with cash or card, but the promise of a generous deed to a friend or loved one. We are huge fans of Donna Wilson’s charming and crafty designs, and have highlighted many of her products online and in the magazine, including her egg cups, pouffes, house blanket, make-your-own-monster kit, and a bevy of other items. So we were excited to hear about her latest collaboration with Rococo Chocolates: a series of six hand-painted easter eggs made of white chocolate layered on top of dark chocolate.
The six-piece collection includes both solid and hollow eggs, but my favorite is Food Chain: a solid egg emblazoned with a carrot inside an egg painted with a rabbit inside a larger egg painted with a fox, all nested Russian Matryoshka-doll-style.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Amazon.com Inc is dipping its toes into the physical world as the largest online retailer offers more products in stores that may benefit from hands-on interaction with shoppers.
Analysts said the move may be inspired by the success of Apple Inc, which has hundreds of its own glitzy stores to show off iPhones, iPads and other gadgets and accessories.
Quidsi, an online retailer Amazon acquired in 2010, opened its first retail store in Manhasset, New York, last year to sell expensive cosmetics and perfumes under the BeautyBar name.
Amazon also plans to open a physical store in its home town of Seattle in coming months to showcase and sell its growing line of gadgets, including the Kindle Fire tablet, industry blog Good E-Reader reported this weekend.
At a conference in late 2011 run by the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, some industry players hinted that Amazon might launch a retail store presence like Apple to let consumers test its gadgets, according to Cowen & Co. analyst Jim Friedland.
“The primary goal of the test is to determine if a physical retail presence can accelerate sales of Kindle devices and follow-on consumption of digital content at an attractive return on invested capital,” Friedland wrote in a note to investors on Monday. An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment.
Such moves are a major departure for Amazon, which has thrived by competing aggressively on price with traditional retailers that are saddled with the cost of leasing physical stores.
But Amazon’s line of Kindle devices may sell better if consumers have a chance to try them out before buying.
These gadgets are already sold at other retailers, including Target, Best Buy and Staples. However, Amazon is likely looking at the potential benefits of having its own stores, analysts said.
If Amazon brings out other gadgets, like a smart phone, or a larger tablet, having an Amazon store will help the company explain how to use these gadgets and the other services tied to them, Friedland said.
Apple Inc, which Amazon now competes against in the tablet market, has had huge success with its chain of retail stores which numbered 361 at the end of 2011.
“I don’t expect to see a bunch of Amazon Supercenters anytime soon, but seeing Apple’s success with retail and realizing that Amazon is more than just an e-tailer now, I think it’s smart for them to explore the opportunity,” Colin Sebastian, an analyst at RW Baird, said.
Amazon often tests new concepts in the Seattle area, the analyst noted.
Amazon has to collect sales tax on online sales in states where it has a physical location. A retail location in Seattle would not trigger new obligations like this because the company already collects sales tax in Washington state, Sebastian noted.
Amazon also collects sales tax in New York state, where Quidsi’s BeautyBar store is located in an up-scale shopping mall called Americana Manhasset.
“It’s very much about the brick and mortar retail store experience,” said Andrea Sanders, creative director at Americana Manhasset.
Consumers can have their hair blow-dried at the BeautyBar store’s “Blow Dry Bar” or get facials, peels and waxing services from a licensed aesthetician in the “Treatment Room,” she explained.
“That’s an experience that you can’t get online,” she added in an interview with Reuters.
Such efforts could dent Amazon’s return on invested capital and hurt the company’s positive working capital dynamic, Cowen’s Friedland warned.
Amazon shares closed down 2.4 percent at $183.14 on Monday.
Wal-Mart Stores, the world’s largest traditional retailer, generates a return on invested capital, or ROIC, of 19 percent, the analyst noted.
Amazon’s ROIC is typically about 35 percent, although returns are currently lower because of big investment projects the company is pursuing, according to Friedland.
Having retail stores may also dilute the competitive advantages of Amazon’s online retail business, including vast selection and convenience, the analyst added.
“The initiative is just a test and a national rollout is not a forgone conclusion,” Friedland said.
Amazon launched an online grocery store called Amazon Fresh in Seattle almost five years ago and the company has not expanded that because the business has yet to generate an attractive return, the analyst noted.
